Black History Month, observed annually in the UK in October, exists to celebrate the history and contributions of Black people and communities. It began in the UK in 1987 and was founded by Ghanaian journalist Akyaaba Addai-Sebo.

The UK AIDS Memorial Quilt @aidsquiltuk is currently on display at @glasgowtramway. I was able to visit it this weekend, and seeing it in person was shocking in a way I hadn’t fully comprehended, having only experienced it through images on a phone or computer screen. The scale of it hits you immediately, as do the bright colours of the fabrics, the vivid imagery and emotive messages. It’s an immediate and painful reminder of the individual lives that each panel represents, and the loved ones who have chosen this way to mourn, celebrate and remember them.

Happy bi+ visibility day friends! It’s an honour to run this platform, celebrating and sharing bisexual+ history and I hope it brings you all as much joy and pride as it brings me. Here’s just a few snippets of bisexual joy from this year, and hopefully there’s many more to come still!

Bisexuality Visibility Day is marked every year on September 23 and was first celebrated in 1999 to honour bisexual+ people and to fight against bi-erasure and biphobia. Today it is recognised globally with events and awareness campaigns, serving as the finale of Bisexual Awareness Week and promoting visibility, education, and acceptance for the bisexual community.

Bisexual Awareness Week, observed every September, leads up to Bi Visibility Day on September 23rd. These events celebrate the bisexual+ community while raising awareness of biphobia and the discrimination faced by bisexual+ people.

Bisexual+ people played a crucial role in AIDS activism, particularly during the early years of the crisis, by organising and leading safe sex education workshops, advocating for inclusive health policies, and supporting affected communities.

Eleno de Céspedes was born in 1545 in Granada, Spain. He and his mother lived under the oppression of slavery but gained their freedom when their enslaver died.

September is Bisexual Visibility Month/Bisexual Pride Month, dedicated to raising awareness about bisexual+ identities and challenging bi-erasure and biphobia, both outside and within the LGBTQ+ community.
